European Position

The European Union plays a key role in the fight against climate change. In application of the policy decisions made during the Montreal Conference (COP11 and COP/MOP1), the EU has initiated the necessary actions for defining a future system for combating climate change after 2012.

As such, the Austrian presidency of the European Union has prepared all of the European contributions (“submissions”) - in particular those relating to the future of the climate scheme in the context of the Convention (April 2006) and the Protocol (March 2006) - which must fuel the work carried out by subsidiary bodies, the meeting of which was held in Bonn in May 2006.

These submissions will stress the importance of the overall coherence between the work of the Convention and that of the Protocol and will continue to use the target approach already contained in the conclusions of the European Council (warming threshold of 2°C translated into a GHG emission reduction percentage between now and 2050).
