The opening ceremony of the Mchanganyiko Women Self Help Group Social Center was held on Tuesday February 14, 2012. The Social Centre is at Kibera Karanja Road, off Kibera Drive (next to the Muslim cemetery). The event was inaugurated by the Kenyan Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Lang’ata constituency Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga and the Ambassador of France, Mr. Etienne De Poncins.

The community based organization is a project initiated by Mchanganyiko Women Self Help Group and is funded by the Embassy of France. The purpose of the project is to build a social centre in the slum of Kibera that will benefit associations and inhabitants of the area to run various activities. Under their early childhood development programme, they are currently running a Kindergarten that offers French lessons to the community’s children.

The Social Fund for Development (SFD) was established by the French government to financially support local communities in countries belonging to the Priority Solidarity Zone in development initiatives. The aim was twofold: participate in the fight against poverty
