Applications for visas

Applications for visas are made by appointment only. Kindly call: +254 20 277 8000 or send us an e-mail mentioning your phone number.

Please note that visa applications sent by mail will not be accepted. The documents must be brought directly to the French Embassy in Nairobi, visa section, by the applicant.

Important: Starting January 2008, the Biometric system has been put in place. Visa applicants are now required to come in person in order to have their fingerprints and picture taken by the visa officer. The passport can still be collected by a third party once processed.
While children below 12 years of age do not have to come in person, a passport size photo attached to the application form is required. For a long stay visa however, children above 6 years are required to present themselves.

Processing period

For Kenyan citizen, Schengen Visas are issued in a minimum period of 7 working days. It is advised to submit the application at least 15 working days before the intended date of travel and no more than 3 months before the travel date.

For information on the processing period for other Nationals, as well as regarding visas for French Overseas Territories other than Mayotte (Reunion, etc.), kindly contact the French Embassy (tel : +254 20 277 8000).

Fees and payment

The fee for a Schengen visa is the equivalent of 60 euros (i.e. 6,593 Ksh), to be paid in Ksh. It is free for children under 6 years old.

The fee for a Shengen visa for children between 6 and 12 years old is the equivalent of 35 euros (i.e. 3,846 Ksh)

The fee for a long stay visa is the equivalent of 99 euros (i.e. 10,879 Ksh)

The fee for visas for Mayotte is the equivalent of 9 euros (i.e. 989 Ksh)

The fee must be paid upon submission of the application, in cash and in Kenyan Shillings only. The fee in local currency depends on the exchange rate. The exact amount is required upon submission of the application. It is not refundable.

Documents necessary for the application for a Tourism visa

Must be submitted in original and clear copies of the same

• Valid passport (passport must be valid for 3 months minimum after expiry of the visa)
• Copies of valid passport and previous Schengen visas if any
• 1 application form, duly filled, dated and signed by the applicant
• 2 passport size coloured photos with a white background, uncovered head and with no spectacles, and the face should cover 2/3 of the photo.
• Air-booking, return - print out of the ticket
• Letter from the employer or company (located in Kenya)
• Pay slips for the last 3 months (they should be photocopies and not originals)
• Medical insurance for repatriation and medical care valid in all Schengen States during the travel period. Letter from the insurance must state : coverage for all Schengen states, amount of coverage, validity period of Medical insurance
• Means of support : last 3 months personal bank statements, certified by the bank (international credit card, traveller cheques, receipt of bank regarding purchasing of foreign currencies may be useful but do not replace the bank statements)
• "Attestation d’accueil" (i.e proof of accomodation) if you are invited by a friend or a relative. The document must be filled out in France (city Hall) by the host and sent in original to the applicant.
• If the applicant is invited by a relative, documentary proof of family relationship between the host and the applicant.
• Or, hotel booking in France duly confirmed by the hotel

Travelling with children under 18 years old
- birth certificate for each child
- a letter or certificate from school
- affidavit authorising the child to travel signed by both parents, if the child is travelling alone or with one parent only.
- copy of parents’ passport.

N.B.: The Embassy reserves the right to ask for more information and documents in addition to the above.

Documents necessary for the application for a Business visa

Must be submitted in original and clear copies of the same

• Valid passport
• Copies of valid passport and previous schengen visas if any (passport must be valid for 3 months minimum after expiry of the visa)
• 1 application form, duly filled, dated and signed by the applicant
• 2 passport size coloured photos with a white background, uncovered head and with no spectacles, and the face should cover 2/3 of the photo.
• Air-booking, return - print out of the ticket
• Letter from the employer or company (located in Kenya)
• Pay slips for the last 3 months (they should be photocopies and not originals)
• Medical insurance for repatriation and medical care valid in all Schengen States during the travel period. Letter from the insurance must state : coverage for all Schengen states, amount of coverage, validity period of Medical insurance
• Invitation letter from the French company that the applicant is going to deal with indicating the party responsible for the expenses/accomodation
• Hotel booking in France duly confirmed by the hotel

Documents necessary for the application for a Student Visa

- Passport (must be valid 3 months minimum after the visa expires) and a copy of the passport
- 1 application form
- 3 passport-size colour photographs, with a white background
- Air-booking ticket print out
- Letter of admission or certificate of registration from the school or university where the applicant intends to study in France
- Cover letter explaining the purpose of the studies in France
- School certificates, diplomas, etc...

Financial guarantee
- Affidavit of support
- Last 3 months bank statements of the sponsor, certified by the bank that must be located in Kenya
- Letter from the sponsor’s employer
- letter from the bank of the sponsor confirming that a 70 000 Kenyan Shilling monthly transfer is possible

NB : Please note that the Embassy of France no longer issues visas for Gabon or Djibouti.

Burkina Faso

Nationals of the following countries who need visas to Burkina Faso will have to apply upon arrival at the borders of Burkina Faso.

Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Denmark, The United States of America, France, Germany, Ireland, Iceland, Leichtenstein, New-zealand, Paraguay, Peru, the UK, Saint-Martin, Sweden, Switzerland, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Southern Sudan residents

Kindly note that the embassy of France in Juba is now issuing Schengen visas to Southern Sudan residents who hold diplomatic and official passports.

Other Southern Sudan residents are advised to apply at our embassies in Nairobi or in Kampala.

Somalia residents

Applications for a Schengen or Long stay visa must be made at the French Embassy in Nairobi.
Applicants are required to come in person in order to have their fingerprints and picture taken by the visa officer.
